Description

Jamie’s coach believes that Jamie, twelve, has a better chance of achieving her Olympic dream as a pairs skater than as a single. So Jamie agrees to skate with Matt, even though they clash the first time they meet. If Matt weren’t enough to deal with, Jamie’s divorced father tells her he is getting married again. A new stepmother and six-year-old brother are just what she doesn’t need. Will her life ever be smooth skating again? Pairs on Ice is more than a book about skating. Tweens will identify with the many conflicts Jamie faces on and off the ice in this fast-paced novel.

While Pairs on Ice is billed as a book for tweens, I found much to enjoy as an adult reader. The story brought back unexpected memories of when I was growing up, trying to figure out where I fit into a household that included a step parent. The story centers on the main character, Jamie, and her quest to become a championship skater who has to deal with the issues of a new step mother. Vollstadt handles the issues well, bringing to life a step mother who is both understanding and down to earth, even more so than Jamie's father. When a crisis arises in Jamie's skating world, she runs away from home and heads to Chicago to her mother whom she believes holds the answers to all her problems.Instead, Jamie finds herself coming to terms with grudges she's held against her mother who moved to Chicago to become a news anchor. When the two talk, Jamie understands though her mom will always live apart from her, she loves her and is there for her. When her skating partner, Matt, shows up in Chicago searching for Jamie, the two are able to see how messed up their communication has been. The question is - how on earth will they ever make it home in time for the competition for which they've worked so hard.I'd recommend this to the young and old. It has something for everyone.
