Description

It's exactly what electronic pop should sound like in 2013. Fresh, euphoric, youthful...it more than delivers on the promise of 2008 s million-selling debut Walking On A Dream and the fantastical imagery that made them a festival highlight wherever Steele strapped on his head-dress, said Q, awarding the album four stars in a lead review. MOJO noted, you can t help but be charmed by their puckish, wide-eyed enthusiasm for the redemptive power of pop. Nearly every track is powered by a room-rattling disco groove, observed Uncut, scoring it 8/10. But what makes DNA , Alive , Concert Pitch and the title song so irresistible is the way their silky melodies resolve into super-saturated Technicolor chorus hooks.

I was turned on to EotS by their single, "Walking On A Dream". I looked up the artist and entered them into one of my Pandora channels. That's when I found I liked "We Are The People" even more, and started searching for more of their music on YouTube and Amazon. While I liked the first four songs on their "Walking On A Dream" album (the rest were a little, 'bleh'), I found I liked about 9 of their songs on the "Ice On The Dune" album and couldn't see a reason not to purchase the whole album. Glad I did, their music is very catchy and I find myself humming their tunes or getting lyrics (lately, "DNA") stuck in my head all the time.Something about their sound reminds me of 80s groups like, Madness, The Pet Shop Boys and/or Depeche Mode (but a little more positive/upbeat). If you could relocate Empire 30 years back in time, they'd certainly have been an international sensation. They seem to have gotten a good deal of exposure from the Honda commercial and Forza (5?) Motorsports, but my teenage daughters have never heard of them, so not sure why they haven't really made inroads in the American market, they surely have the sound and style. While Luke Steele's vocals probably wouldn't win "The Voice", he has a lilting sound, like Boy George had (back in the day) that is captivating and draws you into the music and I don't grow tired or bored of hearing his singing. Their videos are also a bit odd, they seem fairly amateurish and awkward like they did it themselves without any planning or choreography, but they aren't uninteresting, there's a story somewhere in there, maybe it just doesn't translate well to video?Overall, they are my new musical addiction and I've got about 13 of their songs on my Favorites playlist currently.
