Another polar fantasy adventure! Loved it! This is set around the time of the 1st world war. Marina’s dad is a Naval captain & has been away for most of her life, even more so since he mother left when she was very young. Even though he’s never shared his life at sea w/her, she feels a strong pull of the ocean. He is about to set off at sea for another mission of his, & he is sending her to a boarding school to learn how to be a lady. She wants none of that lol she wants to wear trousers, & have an opinion of her own. She doesn’t want to be told she has to stay home w/babies, but to have a career of her own. Instead of boarding the train to the school, she sneaks onto her dads ship. She is discovered of course, & put to work lol This is a time of war & danger though. There’s so much she doesn’t understand about where they’re going & why. Or what the dark shape is under the water, that seems to be following them. The way the author described the sea, the waves, the wind..all of it, was just so beautiful in a way. I could feel the sea & wind on my face. As someone who has a strong connection w/the ocean, I loved this. This is a fantasy, but not heavily so, so don’t go into it expecting a lot of magical or fantastical aspects. Marina got on my nerves a couple of times, but if she hadn’t in this situation-it wouldn’t have been believable. A young girl starved for attention, & wanting to prover herself, but actually making things more difficult than better at times..especially during a stressful time on a ship, & w/war looming-of course you would be annoyed lol This was a thrilling adventure, & such a page turner. I loved the dogs-especially Paddy, who has my whole heart. I also adored Perkins & Brown. They were fantastic! Lol Really enjoyed this. Highly recommend.
