Description

Danger is hard to resist in this sexy young adult thriller following a teen girl caught between all-too-human perils and the brutal natural elements in the mountains—from Becca Fitzpatrick, the New York Times bestselling author of the Hush, Hush saga.Britt Pheiffer has trained to backpack the Teton Range, but she isn’t prepared when her ex-boyfriend, who still haunts her every thought, wants to join her. Before Britt can explore her feelings for Calvin, an unexpected blizzard forces her to seek shelter in a remote cabin, accepting the hospitality of its two very handsome occupants. But her luck takes a turn for the worse when she discovers the men are fugitives, and they take her hostage. Britt is forced to guide them off the mountain, knowing she must stay alive long enough for Calvin to find her. Along the way, Britt finds chilling evidence of a series of murders that could be linked to her captors… But nothing is as it seems, and everyone is keeping secrets, including Mason, one of her kidnappers, whose seemingly genuine kindness confuses Britt. While facing the threats of frigid snowstorms and wild grizzly bears, can Britt figure out who her real enemies are?

I could rewrite the synopsis a hundred times and not give this book justice. I had grown accustomed to the typical YA/NA style of books happening, with instantaneous love and trust and all that yuckity yuck.I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. Becca Fitzpatrick has one of the most realistic views in her books that I have seen in so long -- even in supernatural settings, such as Hush, Hush. However, Hush, Hush can hardly compare to Black Ice. This book is so incredibly written and thoroughly thought out, it was worth the long wait all fans of Becca had to suffer through for her next great debut. I've read plenty of books where I feel safe saying Black Ice is amazing, and by far the best book I've read for the year of 2014. This novel made me cry, laugh, and fall in love with all of the characters. There's so many twists and turns that, for once, I couldn't keep up and was definitely shocked by several points in the novel. Don't even try to predict what's going to happen; you're more than likely wrong. Which is such a refresher. Each of the characters was lovable in their own way - even the antagonist(s). The setting was so vivid I think I got frostbite a couple of times as I was reading. The romance was definitely my favorite, mixed in with the suspense and adventure that made this novel such a fantastic piece. Mason is in no way manipulative, stalkerish, forcive, abusive, or threatening. In fact, we get constant reminders that he can truly be trusted. He does his best to protect Britt, and although he's not an open book, she can definitely catch on that he's different. Not good. Just different. The romance starts as an attraction and grows. Britt is an extremely strong, smart, witty character - another reprieve from the 'usual'. She is in no way a damsel in distress. She refuses to be left to her fate and grows so much in a few days, which seems so accurate with the turmoil she's been shoved into. And the end...Let's just say Mason is my new favorite male character. Read it for yourself and find out! I promise you this is worth every penny you put into buying it. I'm so glad I bought a solid copy of this book. Now I can go back and read my favorite scenes with ease and admire it on my shelf with love.I don't normally write reviews but I had to for this one. I'd give this book 1000/5 stars if I could. Bravo, Becca Fitzpatrick. You have completely wowed me and I look forward to your next piece.
