Description

In the tradition of The Girl on the Train comes the UK bestseller THE ICE TWINS, a terrifying psychological thriller with a twisting plot worthy of Gillian Flynn. One of Sarah's daughters died. But can she be sure which one? A year after one of their identical twin daughters, Lydia, dies in an accident, Angus and Sarah Moorcroft move to the tiny Scottish island Angus inherited from his grandmother, hoping to put together the pieces of their shattered lives. But when their surviving daughter, Kirstie, claims they have mistaken her identity--that she, in fact, is Lydia--their world comes crashing down once again. As winter encroaches, Angus is forced to travel away from the island for work, Sarah is feeling isolated, and Kirstie (or is it Lydia?) is growing more disturbed. When a violent storm leaves Sarah and her daughter stranded, they are forced to confront what really happened on that fateful day.

This was one of the more interesting and entertaining books I have read in quite awhile. The book is well-written and the setting is interesting. I suppose when I find myself getting disturbed enough to want to temporarily put a book down, it must be moving me in some way. The tale plays off the notion of identical twins and the way they often seem to share each others thoughts and possess the ability to communicate with each other without actually speaking, perhaps even after one has passed away. There are many things at play in this story. First, you have the parents overwhelming grief at the loss of a daughter, the anger and blame they place on each other as well as the secrets they are keeping from each other and themselves. Then you also have the surviving twin, her identity confusion and loneliness. Initially, the story focuses more on the surviving twin and how she seems to be losing grip with reality. However, as secrets are revealed later in the story, one begins to wonder if the twin or instead one or both parents are are actually the ones who lost grip. In a way, grief itself is a form of madness, don't you think?
