In Valdez Alaska, in the winter, you will need cleats quite often; but I have real bad arthritis in my hands and have a real hard time with standard shoe cleats. But THESE are GREAT and very easy to put on. I don't recommend that anyone should modify these, but I've found that they are much easier to put on if the heel strap is removed, and they can till be put on quite securely without it (to me, the heel strap just got in the way). I've been using these for a couple of years now, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. The only problem I ever had was one time I stepped on an extension cord while wearing them! It ruined the extension cord, and I'm just lucky it didn't ruin my day too.
