Shirley Brown's debut CD for Malaco Records is a thoroughly contemporary R&B album. Despite having been released in 1989, it has more in common (musically) with 1970s Soul than with contemporary R&B and Shirley's vocals are soulful, earthy and passionate. Yes, this CD has plenty of programmed electronic drums, keyboards and synthesizers but the production approach, choice of material and Shirley's ultra-soulful singing make it a real musical treat.
