Description

A Maritime Tale of Lake Ontario. In the year 1880 Young Mollie McIntyre, recently widowed and now owner of the family operated cargo schooner Gazelle, fights two battles to keep her business afloat- one with Lake Ontario, the other with the male dominated waterfront of her day. Inspired by Oswego's Dr. Mary Walker, Rochester's Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, and other historic female fighters for women's suffrage and self sovereignty, Mollie keeps her ship going only to confront one of the worst Great Lakes gales of the 19th century.

I loved it! You will too! This clever novel, that mixes real history with a nod to current times, is a very, very good story that keeps you wanting to read on more and more. It is a Maritime sea story set in the 1880's that includes real social standards and situitations at the time. The tale tells of a woman that becomes the owner of a cargo schooner after the death- drowning of her husband. The new owner, a forward thinking woman, has to find a way to overcome not only the hardships of real life on a sailing cargo schooner on stormy seas, but the financial and physical risks, (rape and abuse, both mental and physical) and social realities of the times. In the story there are descriptions of how women were precieved and treated then and what eventually began to change. It also shows how women can handle schooners and difficulties of a very demanding occupation, every bit as well as men. This book will make enjoyable reading by the fire with a mulled rum, or by the light of the lamp at anchor. This book will not disapoint anyone.
