This is a wonderful trio session.Brown is a pianist from the Washington area, close to musicians like Billy Hart and Buck Hill. He's a very good and skillfull jazz pianist, not strictly a virtuoso but one whose style prefers to work on subtle arrangements, touch and dynamics. A paradigm of his own style here appears to be his very personal slow and moody rendition of Weill's Mack The Knife, where he builds tension and swing from an almost modal, original arrangement. Every tune presents a side of the pianist and is well chosen, greatly performed and interesting, never too simple nor too cerebral; not a weak track in my opinion. Fresh and swinging, with superb support from great players like Rufus Reid and Al Foster clearly enjoying the trio music happening.
